Obesity is one of the biggest epidemics we face in the U.S today. The sad reality is that many conditions and diseases that are caused by obesity can ultimately be deadly to its victims and when looked at from a financial standpoint, debilitating our economy. The Center for Disease Control found that in the last 20 years there has been a massive increase in obesity in the U.S. Diabetes is one of the most common diseases that is associated with obesity.Type 2 diabetes affects Latinos, Native American Indians, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders in a disproportionate manner. Unlike Type 1 diabetes which is largely genetic,Type 2 diabetes is usually resulted from poor dietary habits and obesity. According to a national examination survey, Mexican Americans are almost twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to be diagnosed with diabetes by a physician.  They have higher rates of end-stage renal disease, caused by diabetes, and they are 50% more likely to die from diabetes as non-Hispanic whites. The purpose of my senior capstone project is to bring diabetes awareness to the Hispanic community. By creating a website, I hope to reach out to people and inform them about this serious and dangerous conditions so that they can take the measures necessary to live a healthy and happy life.
